The IAF Northwest is a regional network of broad-based community alliances in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Each alliance builds individual civic leadership, strengthens its member organizations, and serves as a vehicle for these members to act in the public arena with sufficient power for the common good.

The Alliances create opportunities for people to connect and act powerfully and creatively as leaders – to bring about practical solutions to the challenges facing their families and communities.

MACG Hosts Leadership Training at NE Portland Prison

August leadership training at Columbia River Correctional Institution.

This weekend, ten MACG members went into the Columbia River Correctional Institution in NE Portland, to participate in our Leadership Institute for Public Life training with 14 incarcerated men.  This is the first time the entire leadership training has been available to inmates. This two-day event was a unique opportunity for learning, understanding and relationship-building.

MACG Supports Know Your Rights Training in Beaverton, OR

Know Your Rights training in Beaverton focused on the Latino immigrant community

MACG joined with SOAR Immigration Legal Services and Adelante Mujeres in a Know Your Rights training in Beaverton focused on the Latino immigrant community. Seventy-five people mostly from Washington County attended. Over sixty Latino people came to learn their rights.

Twelve people, many from MACG member institution St. Andrew Lutheran Church, came to pose as ICE agents in role plays so participants could practice asserting their rights if confronted in their homes, workplaces, or if stopped while driving.  When asked why she came to pose as an ICE agent,  one participant said "to show them we DO care."

Extension of Planning Law Opens Way To Greater Affordability

The Sydney Alliance of community organisations has welcomed the extension of an important planning law to all NSW councils – opening the way to building more affordable units in new developments across the state.

The Alliance of over 40 not-for-profit organisations says the extension of State Environmental Planning Policy No. 70 (SEPP 70) to all Local Government Areas, announced this week by Planning Minister Anthony Roberts MP, is an important step towards improving rental affordability.

The Alliance had long campaigned for the law to be extended to all councils.
